Peter Major won his first QUIT Targa West Competition Modern crown holding off Jim Richards to take the outright rally win in Perth today. Major and his co-driver Kim Screaigh (Nissan GTR 35) took top spot on the timing sheets from Richards midway into Leg 1 and continued to stretch their advantage across the final two Leg’s of the tarmac rally, ultimately taking victory by 51 seconds.

Richards and Barry Oliver (Porsche GT2) crossed the final stop control in second outright with Peter Rullo and Simon Iseppi (Nissan GTR 35) taking third.

Disaster hit defending Competition Modern Champion Steve Jones on SS1 when the Nissan GTR 35 experienced engine troubles, forcing Steve to bow out of the event and allowing front runners Jim Richards and Peter Major to breathe a little easier as Jones was now out of contention.

Ross Hamilton and Tony Robson put in consistent times over the weekend to take 4th Outright in Modern Competition in the LFP Prepared Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8.

Mark and Andrew Conacher (Nissan GTR 35) returned to defend their 2009 Challenge Modern crown and proved once again to be the crew to beat.

Paul Summers and Michael Arnold drove the insanely powerful Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR to 17th Outright in Modern Competition.

Adam Johnson and Richard Humphries in the LFP Prepared Renault Clio 197 had a win in Modern Competition class M2C1.

Defending Competition Modern Champion Steve Jones was forced to retire from the rally at the end of SS1 due to a mechanical failure.

QUIT Targa West 2010 concluded in spectacular fashion with the Killarnée City of Perth Super Stage run along the Swan River Foreshore. It was the first time in the rally’s six-year history that a stage had been run in the heart of the city and more than 6000 spectators converged on the Esplanade to enjoy the action.

Jim Richards and Barry Oliver (Porsche GT2) are still sitting comfortable in second with Peter Rullo and Simon Iseppi (Nissan GTR35) in third.

With competitors forced to wait for an hour due to a road closure between Toodyay and Bullsbrook organisers were forced to abandon SS20 in full and send the majority of the Competition Modern and Competition Classic classes through SS22 Bullsbrook Long at transport speed due to poor light.

Leg 3 of QUIT Targa West 2010 kicks off on Sunday in Toodyay.

With the event making its debut to Whiteman Park this year 76 competitors completed two prologue laps of the 3.75km course. These laps were followed by SS1 and SS2 – the first time in the events 6 year history that the opening stages have been held on Thursday.

The first stage of the rally spelt disaster for defending champion Steve Jones and co-driver Ben Searcy when the LFP/Fabcar Nissan GTR35 suffered mechanical failure at the end of the stage. Steve and his crew are still looking at options for him to rejoin the rally for the start of stages tomorrow morning.

Kerry Wade competed in the Mitsubishi Evo 9 TMR taking 1st outright. Kerry also set the fastest time of the event with a 78.151.

Steve Jones was there to compete with Inky Tulloch in a Mitsubishi Evo X, it was a a good weekend with Jones/Tulloch taking second outright. Fourth outright went to Glyn Crimp and Matt Cherry also in a Mitsubishi Evo X.
